Sree Krishna swamy temple Ambalapuzha is a Hindu temple in Alappuzha district of Kerala in southern part of India. Historians believe that the local ruler, Chembakasserry built the Temple between the fifteenth to seventeenth AD. Built with typical Keralan architecture, this Alappuzha Krishna temple has been dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is popular all over the country for the Pal Payasam, which is a daily offering of delightfully sweet milk porridge. This Krishnaswamy temple is also famous for the performance of Pallipaana, which is performed every twelve years by Velans (the sorcerers). It has a majestic display of paintings depicting the 10 Lord Vishnu avatars.
Sree Krishna swamy temple Ambalapuzha is straight away linked to the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple. The idol of the Guruvayoor here came during the raid of Tipu Sultan in the year 1789. The temple serves the payasam. It is of great significance to the devotees. People believe that Guruvayoor visits himself to have the payasam here. There is also a belief that Guruvayoor visited the place at the time of Palpayasa Nedyam. The Temple also holds a treasure of rich paintings of Kerala. Temple interior has Dasavatharam pictures. Dasavatharam is the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The dance, Ottan Thullal was 1st performed at Sree Krishna swamy temple exhibiting social issues of the state.
Legend has it that Lord Krishna once appeared as a sage at a king’s court and challenged him to a game of chess. The king, a chess enthusiast, eagerly accepted the offer. When asked to choose a prize, the sage modestly asked for grains of rice, doubling the numbers on each square on the chessboard. The king lost. He realized that his seemingly simple request had resulted in an astronomical number of grains being emptied from the royal granary. The sage then revealed his true form. He instructed the king to serve Paalpayasam to pilgrims until the debt was repaid.
Designed in Kerala style, the architecture as well as construction of the Krishna temple in Kerala is astounding. A superb painting of 10 Lord Vishnu’s avatars in the temple premises is the main attraction here for the devotees. Above all, Sree Krishna swamy temple Ambalapuzha is known for its magicians. Ottanthullal is here once in a year.
