Here are some important things to note before visiting Kerala:
Back in the year 2014, the government was alarmed by the soaring alcohol consumption in the country. They then decided to make major changes to licensing regulations. So, in Kerala also, they cancelled most bar licenses & increased renewal fees. However, if you don’t want to miss out on a refreshing afternoon beer during your trip here, know that Kerala is certainly not a “dry” state at all. Alcohol still remains legal here, and these restrictions were relaxed in the year 2017 after the government expressed its preference for ‘restraint’ rather than complete ‘prohibition.’ So, with a little effort, you can always find a bar, specifically in major touristy destinations here, as most luxury hotels have invested in expensive licenses. Look for that large, bold & eye-catching “BAR” sign and you can booze off!
Though you can visit Kerala all year round, the best time to visit is from the months of October to March. Monsoon rains from June to August and high temperatures from March onwards tend to make travelling less comfortable. Note that Ayurvedic retreats here have lower rates in the off-seasons and indoor activities are not weather dependent. Peak tourist season is from mid-December to mid-January.
Due to the complexity of Kerala’s language(s) & colonial history, many cities & airports here have more than one name. For example, Trivandrum is also called Thiruvananthapuram and Alleppey is also known as Alappuzha. Most people understand both names, but it’s definitely a good idea for you to double-check before finalizing your flight or train booking.
Kerala has the highest literacy rate in India. While the official language is Malayalam, many of the residents speak English. However, do not be surprised to find out that some people have only basic English skills.
