Kerala houseboats are the modernized versions of the traditional Kettuvallams, large boats of yesteryears. The boats were held together with rope and therefore named after it. Kettuvallams were used to transport rice and spices from Kumarakom and Kuttanad to other cities before road and rail infrastructure came to be. As tourism expanded, these majestic creatures returned. The Kumarakom backwaters are now accessible in a range of houseboats. A traditional houseboat was around sixty to seventy feet long and thirteen to fifteen feet wide at the beam. Some of the new luxurious houseboats are over eighty feet long. Because of their eco-friendly and easily accessible materials such as jackfruit tree wood, coconut fiber, bamboo poles, ropes, and bamboo mats, these boats are easy to build. The boats are assembled using ropes (rather than nails).
Kerala Houseboats today are like the mini-resorts floating on the water. Most of these houseboats have bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, terraces, lunges, along with eco-friendly furniture. One can avail single rooms, double rooms or triple rooms with private small balconies as per the family requirement. Some houseboats are even air-conditioned. Many of these Kerala houseboats have been equipped with electric fans, televisions, hot/cold water in the bathroom and mosquito nets too. One can also see windows on both sides of the deck. In some boats, the beautiful inside world is covered with fine Kerala rugs called metha payas. Some of the more advanced rooms have 2 floors and even provide newspapers, fishing rods, CDs and also facilities to hold small conferences. Such a boat is manned by a well-trained crew. This crew usually has a captain, 2 rowers, one guide and also one cook. The crew ensures a comfortable stay during the many hours of traveling through the water. There will be environmentally-friendly waste/wastewater treatment facilities. Some boats also use the beautiful traditional lanterns for creating a lovely romantic atmosphere.
Lush fields, narrow canals flowing through lots of greenery, and coconut palms along the coast are just some of the amazing natural views that a houseboat has to offer. Guests will get a rustic feel with picturesque views of the emerald villages along the lakeshore, where they can see villagers engaging in several traditional activities including fishing & farming etc. The houseboat also offers the spectacular views of the bird sanctuary. Sometimes, flocks of both local and migratory birds can also be observed. These may include Siberian storks, kingfishers, cormorants, herons, water ducks, and many more.
