The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Kerala is one of the most popular bird sanctuaries of the country. Located in the picturesque town of Kumarakom, the sanctuary is spread over 14 acres and is home to a variety of birds. It is located in the Kumarakom village in the Kottayam district of Kerala. The sanctuary is a part of the Kottayam wildlife division.

Housing a host of migratory birds & resident birds, the sanctuary happens to be the chirping ground for a large variety of birds, including the rare Siberian crane. Some of the other popular birds that can be spotted here are the Brahminy kite, duck, cormorant, heron, egret, and ibis.

The sanctuary is part of the ecosystem of the Vembanad Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Kerala. The sanctuary is a haven for migratory birds from all over the world and is a popular spot for bird watching. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary houses almost 25,000 birds that belong to 180 species.
Timings & Entry Tickets
The entry tickets for the sanctuary can be purchased from the main gate. The sanctuary is open for the visitors all days of the week from 6:30 AM in the morning to 5 PM in the evening. The entry fee is provided below.
Indians: Fifty rupees
Foreigners: One fifty rupees
How to Reach?
By Train: Indian Railway is having a large number of trains connecting Kottayam from other parts of the country. This place happens to be at a distance of 16.6 kilometers from Kottayam railway station via Kottayam-Kumarakom road that could possibly be reached in thirty minutes only by a local bus/taxi.
By Road: This place is an hour’s drive from nearby cities like Kottayam, Kochi, Kakkanad & Alappuzha. Also, Kumarakom is very well-connected to other parts of India through different state highways as well as various national highways.
By Air: The place happens to be at a distance of 76.5 kilometers from Cochin’s International Airport via NH-66. It takes around one hour forty minutes to reach here by bus/taxi.
